It’s automatic now. If you want to feel better about yourself, you have to stop. How about some help? It can be hard to stop a bad habit.
Substitution = Survival. Substitution = Survival.
Earlier, our friend knew that she needed to stop a bad habit.
She had been smoking for 20 years, and she was physically feeling the effects. She knew that nicotine exacerbated her anxiety and that being in a smoking rut did not help her depression.
You know what? She quit. It took a lot to get her there.
About habits
We’re human, we do habits. All animals have habits. Some animals are better than others.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 18th-century novelist and stateman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said the following:
The only comfort a person can find is in his habit. Even unpleasant things that we are accustomed to, we find it difficult to give up.
He was probably referring to both men and women when he said, “consider the times.”
Habits are a characteristic of all species. If you stop to think about it, these habits make perfect sense.
Safety
Over the years, habits evolved into something useful and essential. They are important because they ensure safety.
We are protected by the fact that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors become “automatic”. That’s what matters from a survival standpoint.
Our habit wiring can certainly be a victim. The bad ones, and even the dangerous ones, will then come calling.
